We don't do the standard tourist checklist. Every experience below was chosen because it's the kind of thing you'll talk about for years.
11 days. 3 cities. From the Great Wall to Avatar Mountains.
We land in Beijing and head straight to our hotel. Today's all about settling in and soaking up first impressions. In the evening, we head to Wangfujing Street, a shopping and street food paradise that's been a hub for centuries. It's got neon, snacks, and full-blown people-watching potential. Bonus: try a few of those quirky food items everyone talks about. (You don't have to actually eat the scorpion. Just take the photo.)
We wake up and channel our inner monk with a Tai Chi session at the Temple of Heaven, where emperors prayed for good harvests since the 1400s. This UNESCO site's design is based on cosmic harmony and ancient Feng Shui principles. The Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests is built without nails. Just wood, math, and serious vibes. After Tai Chi, we get our hands dirty (and floury) at a dumpling-making class . Think jiaozi (boiled), shumai (steamed), and bao (stuffed buns). It's part cooking class, part comedy show. We then visit the Hutongs, narrow alleys with centuries-old courtyards. Some date back to the 1200s. We end with a Peking Duck dinner . The crispy skin, the soft pancakes, the plum sauce, even the way they slice it is theatrical. We are also going to visit a popular nightlife area in beijing.
Today,We are going to visit great wall of china ! Built during the Ming Dynasty, this section is steep, scenic, and slightly less touristy than other parts of Great wall. We cable car up, yell "whoa" at the views, then take a giant slide back down because Why walk when you can slide ? In the evening, we wander through 798 Art District, a former weapons factory turned modern art zone. There are sculptures, galleries, neon, weird coffee shops, and cool people in oversized glasses.
Fenghuang Ancient Town is a well-preserved historic town in western Hunan Province, built over 300 years ago during the Qing dynasty. It is known for its traditional wooden stilt houses (Diaojiaolou) constructed along the Tuojiang River. The town has cobblestone streets, ancient bridges (such as the Hong Bridge), and historic city walls dating back hundreds of years. Fenghuang has a rich cultural heritage influenced by the Miao and Tujia ethnic minorities, who continue to live in and around the town. The town is also famous for its night views, when traditional buildings are illuminated, reflecting on the river. Local cuisine includes spicy Hunan dishes such as Xiang-style snacks and rice tofu.
We head out to the Furong Ancient Town, originally built by the Tujia people. Set dramatically over a waterfall and full of stilted wooden homes, it was made famous by the 1980s film Hibiscus Town . We will be seeing this in the morning. We then head to Zhangjiajie. We will be staying near the avatar mountains in zhangjiajie this night.
Today is some high-altitude drama. We ride the longest cable car in the world up Tianmen Mountain . This place is sacred, dramatic, and drop-dead gorgeous. The glass skywalk clings to cliffs like an action movie scene, and Heaven's Gate is a massive natural hole in the rock you can see from miles away. There's also a 999-step staircase if you're up for it. We're not. But the view's the same.
We go full wilderness mode in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, China's first national forest park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We ride the Bailong Elevator (world's tallest outdoor lift), and hike Yuanjiajie, the area that inspired the floating mountains in Avatar . The Golden Whip Stream walk is a chilled-out woodland trail with monkeys, koi fish, and unreal stone towers. We also try traditional Tujia food, the Tujia are an indigenous group with deep cultural roots here, and their cuisine is bold and spicy.
Today we head to our last city : Shanghai, from ancient waterfalls to ultra-modern Shanghai. We check in and take power nap. We will also visit Bund today. This riverside strip is where colonial architecture meets futuristic skyline. By night, the Pudong skyline lights up like a sci-fi movie. Add street snacks like jianbing and xiaolongbao to the mix, it's the perfect first night.
We kick off at Yu Garden, a 16th-century garden built during the Ming Dynasty. It's a maze of ponds, bridges, and pavilions that once belonged to a wealthy government official. Then comes our French Concession walk, a leafy, European-style neighborhood from Shanghai's colonial past, now full of cafes, art shops, and boutique hotels. End the day with shopping at Nanjing Road or sky-bar drinks above the city. Optional: try Shanghai's famous dumpling spots like Din Tai Fung or Jia Jia Tang Bao.
Start with Shanghai Zoo, home to China's cutest global ambassadors, the giant pandas . They're sleepy, slow, and still better at posing than us. Then we slide over to Zhujiajiao Water Town, an ancient canal town often called the " Venice of Shanghai ." Built during the Ming and Qing dynasties, it's full of arched bridges, koi-filled canals, and old-school tea houses. End the day with one final group dinner, because tomorrow it's bye bye time .
After 10 days of culture, chaos, dumplings, mountains, and wild new friendships, we wrap it all up in Shanghai. There's time for last-minute shopping, final group photos, or one more bowl of xiaolongbao before we say our goodbyes. From the Great Wall to glass skywalks, hutongs to neon skylines, you're walking away with a little piece of China and a lot of new memories. Until next time, zàijiàn .

"This was my third trip with One in the Orange Jacket and Vyshakh, after Egypt & Jordan and Bhutan, and each one has been unforgettable in its own way. From Dushanbe to Osh, through the Pamir mountains, every day brought breathtaking views, warm local stays, and seamless planning. We felt completely taken care of. But the best part? The people. We started as strangers and ended as a close-knit group, something that happens naturally on a Vyshakh-led trip. Grateful for yet another amazing journey."
"I'm an adventure guide from Cape Town, South Africa, travelling solo for the first time. I know adventure, having taken in excess of 5000 guests personally on mountain hikes and adventure tours. This one was the best! To put it simply, it's the connection and immersion I experienced. The hospitality, connection, empathy and love I felt from this group of strangers made this trip one which I will cherish for the rest of my life. They've managed to curate an off the beaten track adventure experience that anyone can participate in."
"It felt like living a scene from Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, as I checked off core memories from my travel bucket list. I chose skydiving in Queenstown, Team OJ struck the perfect balance between adrenaline and nature. A surprise highlight was the Coldplay concert. Vyshak was not only knowledgeable about every destination but also ensured that every member of our group felt comfortable and included. By the end of our journey, those who were once strangers on Day 1 had transformed into friends. Team OJ stands out for their commitment to delivering not just adventures, but lifelong memories."
