The Itinerary

7 days. Snow, steppe and ski. Four themed dinners. One unforgettable countdown to 2027.

Day 1

๐Ÿฝ๏ธ ARRIVE ALMATY ยท WELCOME KAZAKH DINNER

โœˆ๏ธ Arrival๐Ÿ– Besbarmak๐Ÿจ Check-in
โ–พ
Snowy Almaty park on a winter evening Besbarmak, the national Kazakh dish

Land in Almaty on an evening flight. Quick transfer to the hotel, freshen up, and we open the trip the way Kazakhs always do, around a table. A welcome dinner of besbarmak, the national dish of slow-cooked meat over wide noodles, paired with a glass of kymyz if you are brave. Tomorrow the city, then the road east.

๐Ÿค“ Did You Know? Almaty means "father of apples." Scientists trace every modern apple in the world back to the wild apple forests that still grow in these hills.
Day 2

โ›ช ALMATY CITY ยท GREEN BAZAAR, PANFILOV PARK, ZENKOV CATHEDRAL

๐ŸฅŸ Green Bazaarโ›ช Zenkov Cathedral๐Ÿท Russian Dinner
โ–พ
Inside the Soviet-era Green Bazaar in Almaty Zenkov Cathedral, the wooden church without a single nail, in winter Snow-covered Almaty park trees

The day belongs to Almaty. We start at the Green Bazaar, a Soviet-era trading hall stacked with dried fruits, horse meat sausages and barrels of fermented kymyz. From there into Panfilov Park, snow on the war memorial and the eternal flame still burning. The afternoon highlight is the Zenkov Cathedral, one of the tallest wooden buildings on the planet, built in 1907 without a single nail. We close the day with a Russian dinner, pelmeni and borscht, the way the city has eaten for a century.

๐Ÿค“ Did You Know? Zenkov survived the catastrophic 1911 earthquake that flattened most of Almaty's brick buildings, because wood flexes where stone snaps.
Day 3

โ„๏ธ DRIVE TO SATY ยท FROZEN KOLSAI LAKE & BANYA NIGHT

๐Ÿ›– Saty Village๐Ÿฅถ Frozen Kolsai๐Ÿง– Wood-Fired Banya
โ–พ
Walking on the frozen surface of Kolsai Lake Kolsai Lake in winter, surrounded by Tian Shan peaks

Morning, we point the coach east and drive five hours into the Tian Shan foothills toward Saty, a wooden Kazakh village above the snowline. After lunch with the homestay family, we trek to Kolsai Lake 1, sitting at 1,818 metres, its surface frozen pale under the winter sky. Back to the homestay for the headline of the night, a wood-fired banya, the Russian sauna ritual, sweat in the steam, plunge into the snow, repeat. Dinner at the family table, then dombra music by the fireplace.

๐Ÿค“ Did You Know? A real banya is a three-round affair, hot steam, cold plunge, rest, hot steam, cold plunge, rest. Kazakhs say it cures everything from a long drive to a long winter.
Day 4

๐ŸŒฒ FROZEN KAINDY + CHARYN CANYON ยท SOVIET CANTEEN DINNER

๐ŸŒฒ Kaindy Lake๐Ÿœ๏ธ Charyn Canyon๐Ÿฅฃ Stolovaya Dinner
โ–พ
A frozen alpine lake in winter Kazakhstan, snow on the shore and snowy Tian Shan peaks behind Red rock walls of Charyn Canyon Charyn Canyon road winding through red sandstone

Today, the two most photographed places in Kazakhstan. Morning at Kaindy Lake, where a 1911 earthquake drowned a forest of spruce trees, and the trunks still spear up out of the now-frozen turquoise surface. In summer divers swim between them. In winter you walk on the ice and look down. Afternoon at Charyn Canyon, the quieter cousin of the Grand Canyon, red sandstone walls dusted with snow, surreal at golden hour. Long drive back to Almaty, where we close the day at a stolovaya, a Soviet-style canteen, hot pelmeni and kompot on metal trays.

๐Ÿค“ Did You Know? Charyn Canyon is 12 million years old, and its red walls are made of the same iron-rich sediment that gives the Colorado plateau its colour.
Day 5

๐ŸŽฟ SHYMBULAK SKI RESORT ยท GEORGIAN DINNER

๐Ÿšก Cable Car๐ŸŽฟ Ski Lesson๐Ÿท Georgian Dinner
โ–พ
Shymbulak ski slope at 2,260 metres Chalet restaurant at Shymbulak ski resort Shymbulak cable car heading up the mountain Medeu valley and ice rink in winter twilight, below Shymbulak

The headline day. Cable car up to Shymbulak, the biggest ski resort in Central Asia, sitting at 2,260 metres. The morning is a two-hour ski or snowboard lesson with English-speaking instructors, gear and lift pass included. If you already ski, the same pass opens the blue and red runs all day. Lunch is on the mountain, soup, plov and a hot drink with the white peaks in front of you. Optional banya in the evening, then dinner is Georgian, khachapuri the cheese-bread boat with a runny yolk in the middle, khinkali the soup dumpling, kebab and a glass of saperavi wine.

๐Ÿค“ Did You Know? The original Medeu ice rink just below Shymbulak is the highest open-air speed-skating rink in the world, and 144 world records have been broken there since 1951.
Day 6

๐ŸŽ† NEW YEAR'S EVE ยท KOK-TOBE & REPUBLIC SQUARE FIREWORKS

๐Ÿšก Kok-Tobe Cable Car๐ŸŽ† Fireworks at Midnight๐Ÿชฉ Almaty Club Night
โ–พ
View of Almaty city from the Kok-Tobe cable car Almaty city lights at night seen from Kok-Tobe

A slow Almaty morning, coffee, brunch, then a couple of hours for local shopping. Pick up Kazakh felt souvenirs, leather, dried fruits, vodka if that is your thing. Afternoon, cable car up to Kok-Tobe, the hill that gives Almaty its skyline view. The Christmas market is in full swing, a Beatles statue is somehow there, and the sun sets over the white Tian Shan range. Back down for the moment everyone came for, New Year's Eve at Republic Square, fireworks at the stroke of midnight, the crowd in big coats and big smiles. After the countdown, into an Almaty club to dance into 2027.

๐Ÿค“ Did You Know? The Beatles statue on Kok-Tobe was put up in 2007 because Kazakhs say the band's records were smuggled into the Soviet Union through Almaty and helped shape an entire generation.
Day 7

โœˆ๏ธ DEPART ALMATY ยท AFTERNOON FLIGHT

๐Ÿฅ Slow Brunch๐Ÿ›๏ธ Last Strollโœˆ๏ธ Departure ALA
โ–พ
Snow-laced Almaty park trees on a farewell morning

A slow start, brunch at the hotel, last walk around the city centre. Pack up and the coach takes us to the airport for the afternoon flight home. You leave with snow in your phone roll, a new appreciation for steam and ice, and probably a slight ski-day soreness. Sau bolyngyz, Kazakhstan.

๐Ÿค“ Did You Know? "Sau bolyngyz" is the Kazakh goodbye, and it literally means "be healthy," the kindest sign-off in any language.

"This was my third trip with One in the Orange Jacket and Vyshakh, after Egypt & Jordan and Bhutan, and each one has been unforgettable in its own way. From Dushanbe to Osh, through the Pamir mountains, every day brought breathtaking views, warm local stays, and seamless planning. We felt completely taken care of. But the best part? The people. We started as strangers and ended as a close-knit group, something that happens naturally on a Vyshakh-led trip. Grateful for yet another amazing journey."

"I'm an adventure guide from Cape Town, South Africa, travelling solo for the first time. I know adventure, having taken in excess of 5000 guests personally on mountain hikes and adventure tours. This one was the best! To put it simply, it's the connection and immersion I experienced. The hospitality, connection, empathy and love I felt from this group of strangers made this trip one which I will cherish for the rest of my life. They've managed to curate an off the beaten track adventure experience that anyone can participate in."

"It felt like living a scene from Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, as I checked off core memories from my travel bucket list. Team OJ struck the perfect balance between adrenaline and nature, and the trip leader was not only knowledgeable about every destination but also ensured that every member of our group felt comfortable and included. By the end of our journey, those who were once strangers on Day 1 had transformed into friends. Team OJ stands out for their commitment to delivering not just adventures, but lifelong memories."

What should you bring?

+
๐Ÿงฅ Layers for the Cold A proper winter jacket rated for -20ยฐC ยท A warm fleece or wool mid-layer ยท Thermal innerwear top and bottom (2 sets) ยท Warm wool socks (4 to 5 pairs) ยท A beanie, a neck buff, and waterproof gloves

๐ŸŽฟ Ski Day Note Ski gear is rented for you at Shymbulak. Bring goggles or sunglasses with UV protection, sunscreen, and lip balm with SPF (snow burn is real). A small day backpack helps too.

๐ŸŽ’ Travel Essentials Power bank ยท Universal travel adapter (Kazakhstan uses Type C and F plugs, 220V) ยท Reusable water bottle (thermos is even better) ยท Small first-aid kit ยท Travel documents (passport with 6+ months validity)

๐ŸŽ‰ For the NYE Night One nicer outfit you can layer warmly under your jacket for Republic Square and the club after. Almaty dresses up for New Year.

I'm coming solo. Is that a problem?

+
Most people come alone for my trips. About 25% of the people bring a friend or partner. Honestly it really doesn't matter. I have seen on all the batches I have led, most people really gel with everyone, even the ones who thought they wouldn't gel up, surprise themselves always with the way they got comfortable with everyone.

What are trips like with OJ?

+
Usually most batch sizes are between 12 to 14 people aged between 18 to 38. Most people come alone or with a friend. The trip would feel like you are travelling more with college friends than strangers. We tend to do more outdoorsy, experiential things than regular tours. If we find a beautiful sunset or a hidden spot, we stop the vehicle right away. We usually sleep very late because people play group games and feel they'll miss precious time with the group.

Do Indians need a visa for Kazakhstan?

+
No. As of 2026, Kazakhstan is visa-free for Indian passport holders for stays of up to 14 days. You only need a passport with at least 6 months validity from the date of entry. We send you the arrival-form checklist and entry-step note two weeks before departure.

How cold does it actually get in late December?

+
Cold, but manageable, and dry. Almaty city sits at minus 5 to minus 10 degrees, and the higher days at Shymbulak and Saty go to minus 15 to minus 20. It is dry cold, not the wet cold of Indian hill stations, so it feels much softer than the numbers read. We send a winter packing list when you block your slot, and everyone you ride with on the trip has the right layers.

I have never skied. Will I be okay on the Shymbulak day?

+
Yes, this day is built for first-timers. You get a two-hour group lesson with an English-speaking instructor, full gear rental and a lift pass, all included. Two hours is enough to be turning on the gentle green slopes by lunch. If you already ski, the same pass opens up the blue and red runs all day.

Flights & Visa Considerations
