The Itinerary

9 days. St. Petersburg to Moscow. The Hermitage, a Soviet submarine, a morning train south, Suzdal's wooden churches, and ending the year with techno in Red Square.

Day 1

ARRIVE ST. PETERSBURG · SAVIOUR ON SPILLED BLOOD

Land at LEDChristmas Streets2 a.m. Bridge
▾
Saviour on Spilled Blood St Petersburg St Petersburg Christmas streets Neva bridge night opening

Welcome to Russia. Immigration happens at your first Russian airport, most routings come in via Moscow and then a short hop up to St. Petersburg. Let's start St. Petersburg with a walk in the Christmas streets after a few hours of nap for those who are jet-lagged. If you have read enough of my posts, you know how we give importance to simple things like going out for a night walk. We will also be seeing Saviour on Spilled Blood from outside. Post which we will also go out to see one of these bridges open up for incoming ships. It's an event worthwhile watching, 1000s of locals come see this every night and clap when it's all done. It's a 2 a.m. thing, so if you can't stay up until then, you will miss it.

Day 2

WALKING TOUR & HERMITAGE MUSEUM

11 a.m. Walking TourHermitagePalace Square
▾
Hermitage Museum St Petersburg Palace Square Hermitage

We will take a walking tour of the town by 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. After lunch, let's head to the world's second-largest museum: home to over 3 million art pieces, which means you will stay there for nearly six years if you spend 1 minute by each piece of artwork, not to mention that you'd cover the distance of about 24 km (15 mi) walking from one exhibit to the other. Moreover, there are 117 staircases in the Hermitage & more than 18,800 doors. Yes, you will get lost, multiple times. But you will know where to find me Since it is a long day, we will relax sometime, watching a street performance as we wait for others to join us at the Palace Square. Find the orange jacket folks. Today we will do a cookout session with others if you are game.

Day 3

C-189 SUBMARINE & ST. ISAAC'S COLONNADE

C-189 SubSt. Isaac's300-step Sunset
▾
C-189 Soviet submarine St Petersburg C-189 submarine interior St Isaac St Petersburg from the colonnade

Here is a place to learn how a Soviet submarine actually worked. You will see torpedoes, old communication instruments and even the living quarters of the submarine staff. Built at St. Petersburg's Baltic Factory and launched in 1954, the C-189 is a 613-class diesel-electric submarine that saw 35 years of service in the Soviet fleet. The guide will be one of the people who actually worked in one of these submarines. After lunch, we will head to the St. Isaac's Cathedral Colonnade. The colonnade of St. Isaac's Cathedral in St. Petersburg offers a spectacular panoramic view for watching the sunset, providing an aerial perspective of the city as the light changes. Visitors can climb the approximately 300 steps to the colonnade to see the city from above and experience stunning views, especially during twilight.

Day 4

MORNING TRAIN TO MOSCOW · NUCLEAR BUNKER

By evening we will head out to a nuclear bunker, 80 metres under the earth. It is so well hidden that even when you are standing in front of it, you won't realise the grand scale of it. We will reach back to Red Square at night, for it's a place to be as they light up the whole area.

Day 5

EXPLORE VLADIMIR · OVERNIGHT IN SUZDAL

Public TransportWooden ChurchesSuzdal Overnight
▾
Vladimir town Russia Suzdal church Russia Suzdal wooden house Suzdal cathedral spires Suzdal old town Suzdal Soviet preserved town

We will head out from Moscow. Only carry a couple of pairs of clothes as we will only spend a night in Suzdal. We will be commuting by public transport to Suzdal from Vladimir, and back. Out of the entire Russia trip, you will remember Suzdal the most. Suzdal is so perfect, in fact, that I sensed a touch of design behind it, Soviet design, to be specific. It turns out that the Soviet Union decided to avoid building any modern buildings in Suzdal in order to preserve its tourist appeal, banning buildings over two stories high, except for cathedrals, of course. So today Suzdal has none of the tall apartment blocks that characterize other former Soviet towns and cities, but is instead filled with beautiful churches and wooden houses.

Day 6

RETURN TO MOSCOW & FREE EVENING

Suzdal → MoscowOptional BanyaFree Evening
▾

We will be back to the city by evening. Let's do a crazy banya bath: a banya typically includes a steam room with wooden benches, leafy branches that are used for massages, and buckets or pools of cold water. We will either do this today or post New Year's heavy drinking and techno party. We will take a call according to the group.

Day 7

BANYA BATH & GUN SHOOTING

Since it's the day before New Year's Eve, let's start with a BANG :D. Post that we will be doing one of the most memorable activities of the trip: banya bath. Both of the activities need pre-booking, so please let us know when you book the trip. Men and women have separate buildings.

Day 8

RED SQUARE & NEW YEAR TECHNO PARTY

Today we visit Red Square in the evening, dressed in its full New Year lights. Note that Red Square typically closes to the public by early evening on Dec 31, so the midnight countdown happens at the New Year techno party: entry to the 1991 club is part of the itinerary, the fireworks are visible across the city and you'll be counting down with 1000s of joyful folks inside. This night will remain one of the most memorable New Year nights you will ever have.

What Trippers Say

"I have done 3 trips with OJ and each one has been incredible. Vyshakh has a way of finding the most authentic experiences in every destination, it never feels like a tourist package. The group he puts together is always the right mix of people. I've made friends on these trips that I still keep in touch with years later."

"As an adventure guide from Cape Town I was skeptical, but OJ delivered on every promise. The Meghalaya trip was one of the best I've done anywhere in the world, and I've done a lot. The attention to detail, the safety protocols, the way the group bonded. Vyshakh runs a seriously professional operation with a deeply personal touch."

"New Zealand with OJ was genuinely life-changing. The skydiving, the group bonding, the way Vyshakh manages to make every person feel included, it's special. I came as a solo traveller and left with a group of friends I'll have forever. If you're on the fence about booking an international trip with OJ, just do it."

Do you have a cancellation policy?

+

If Plans Change, We've Got You We totally get it, life happens, and sometimes your plans have to take a rain check. That's why we've kept our cancellation policy simple, transparent, and as kind as possible.

• 45+ days before the trip: 10% cancellation charge
• 30–44 days before the trip: 25% cancellation charge
• 15–29 days before the trip: 50% cancellation charge
• Within 14 days of the trip: 100% cancellation charge

These are calculated on the total trip amount, not just the token amount.

Now, if you can find someone to take your spot, we'll happily refund your full amount. No questions asked. Because at the end of the day, we'd rather have someone travel than hold back your money.

To keep your spot confirmed, please clear the remaining balance by the due date, it helps us lock in stays, permits, and experiences for the group. If payments are delayed beyond that, we'll have to treat it as a cancellation (same policy applies).

When will the remaining payment be collected?

+
We collect the full remaining payment 45 days before the trip starts. If the payment isn't made by then, we'll assume your slot is cancelled, and our cancellation policy applies.

What should you bring?

+
  1. Passport (6 month validity) + visa
  2. Insulated winter jacket rated to -15°C (1) – the one thing you cannot improvise
  3. Thermal base layers (2 sets, top and bottom)
  4. Fleece mid-layer (2)
  5. Waterproof winter boots (1 pair) – buy a size up so thick socks fit
  6. Wool socks (5 pairs)
  7. Insulated gloves (1 pair)
  8. Beanie + neck gaiter (1 each)
  9. Hand warmers (a pack)
  10. Power bank (1) – keep it inside your jacket, lithium drains fast in the cold
  11. Jeans and sweaters (2-3) – for the city days
  12. One smart-casual outfit – for the club night
  13. Heavy moisturiser + lip balm – very dry indoor air
  14. Plug type C and F

I'm coming solo. Is that a problem?

+
  • Most people come alone for my trips
  • About 25% of the people bring a friend or partner
  • Honestly it really doesn't matter
  • I have seen on all the batches I have led, most people really gel with everyone, even the ones who thought they wouldn't gel up surprise themselves always with the way they got comfortable with everyone

What are trips like with OJ?

+
Each batch is up to 18 people, mostly aged between 18–38. Most people come alone or with a friend. The trip would feel like you are travelling more with college friends than strangers. We tend to do more outdoorsy, experiential things than regular tours. If we find a beautiful sunset or a hidden spot, we stop the vehicle right away. We usually sleep very late because people play group games and feel they'll miss precious time with the group.

Do I need a Russian tourist visa? Is it included?

+
Yes, Indian passport holders need a Russian tourist visa to enter, and yes, it is included in this trip. OJ handles the paperwork: we send you the documentation checklist after slot block (passport scan, photos, employment letter, ITR, hotel confirmation, invitation letter), submit on your behalf via the Russian Visa Application Centre, and ship the stamped passport back to you. The visa takes about 10 days once we submit, so worth blocking early. The visa fee is part of the trip cost, you do not pay separately.

Is the New Year techno party included?

+
Yes, entry to the 1991 techno club on the night of Dec 31 → Jan 1 is part of the itinerary. Drinks at the bar are on you. We visit Red Square in the evening in its full New Year lights; note that Red Square typically closes to the public by early evening on Dec 31, so the midnight countdown itself happens at the techno party, with the city's fireworks visible as the New Year arrives. This night will remain one of the most memorable New Year nights you will ever have.

Why is this cheaper than the 13-day Russia trip?

+
Because it skips Murmansk. The 13-day version opens with four days inside the Arctic Circle: four nights of Northern Lights hunting with local guides, a husky farm, and the drive out to Teriberka. That block carries its own guides, its own vehicles and four extra nights of stay, and it is the expensive part of the trip. Drop it and the price drops with it. Everything from St. Petersburg onward is identical, same itinerary, same group, same New Year techno club. You will simply meet the Arctic group when they land in St. Petersburg.

Do we see the Northern Lights on this one?

+
No. Aurora needs the Arctic Circle and this trip stays in St. Petersburg, Moscow and Suzdal, all far too far south. If the Northern Lights are the reason you are looking at Russia, book the 13-day version instead, it is built around four hunts in Murmansk.

Flight & Visa Considerations

Flight & Visa Guide (Notion)
Fly into St. Petersburg (LED) on Day 1; fly out from Moscow (SVO/DME) after noon on Day 9. Most India routings go via Doha, Dubai, or Istanbul to Moscow, then a short domestic hop up to St. Petersburg. Russian tourist visa is included- OJ handles the application; you'll only need to submit documents and biometrics. The Notion guide below has the recommended flight stacks, document checklist, embassy timelines, and what to pack.
