Day 1

πŸ›¬ MURMANSK ARRIVAL

✈️ MurmanskπŸ›‚ Immigration in MoscowπŸ₯‚ Welcome Meet
β–Ύ
Murmansk arctic city Murmansk winter street Murmansk arctic snow

Welcome to Russia. Our immigration will be done in Moscow. Today evening, we will reach Murmansk: the biggest city in the Arctic Circle, located in the extreme northwest of Russia. Our Russia group trip starts here πŸ™‚ As it's a long flight, today we will do only basic chores & just get to know each other and the town a bit. We will procure SIM, needed winter apparel and some food for the onward journey. People who don't want to do Murmansk can skip to Day 5, they can fly in directly to St. Petersburg.

πŸ€“ Did You Know? Murmansk is the largest city in the world inside the Arctic Circle and the only ice-free port on the Russian Arctic coast, kept open year-round by warm currents from the Gulf Stream.
Day 2

🐺 HUSKY FARM & NORTHERN LIGHTS HUNT

🐺 Husky Sledge🌌 Aurora HuntπŸ“‘ Local Guides
β–Ύ
Husky farm Murmansk Husky sledge ride Arctic Husky in the snow Northern Lights aurora hunt Aurora Borealis Murmansk

Following is going to be the most beautiful 24 hours of your recent months. We start with a visit to the husky farm. We will be playing with them & go for a short ride in a husky sledge. We have professional local guides who keep a close look on the upcoming nights for several weeks, this increases our chances to get much better views. Tonight, after an evening quick-nap, we will head out for the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) hunting.

Day 3

🌊 TERIBERKA, END OF THE EARTH · XMAS

🌊 Arctic Ocean⏱️ 8-hour ReturnπŸŽ„ Christmas Day
β–Ύ
Teriberka end of the earth Teriberka coast Arctic Teriberka shipwrecks

It's the last point after which the Arctic Ocean starts, so basically the end of mainland as we know it. It takes about 8 hours to go and come back. Note that the weather in this region is too harsh and the possibility of this visit lies entirely on whether there is high wind / a storm or not. The day is extremely windy. Carry your best gears today.

Day 4

🌌 EXTRA AURORA DAY & ARCTIC FLOATING

🌌 Buffer Aurora Day🌊 Arctic FloatingπŸ“ˆ CME Forecast
β–Ύ
Murmansk aurora forecast Northern Lights forecast chart Aurora science Hubble

Witnessing the aurora is a matter of luck and timing. Hence we keep 1 more buffer day to increase our possibility to see this. The local guides will decide which day out of our 4 nights in Murmansk we will head out for the Northern Lights hunt. Did you know? Aurora also has a sound. Aurora also happens on other planets. It is possible to predict geomagnetic activity and aurora a day or so in advance by detecting solar Coronal Mass Ejections (CME) near the sun.

πŸ€“ Did You Know? Note that Northern Lights depend on weather conditions and aren't guaranteed, that's exactly why we keep the buffer night. Arctic floating (a sub-zero ocean dip in a thermal suit) is an optional add-on, not included in the trip cost.
Day 5

β›ͺ FLY TO ST. PETERSBURG Β· SAVIOUR ON SPILLED BLOOD

✈️ Murmansk β†’ LEDπŸŒƒ Christmas StreetsπŸŒ‰ 2 a.m. Bridge
β–Ύ
Saviour on Spilled Blood St Petersburg St Petersburg Christmas streets Neva bridge night opening

Well hello people. Let's start St. Petersburg with a walk in the Christmas streets after a few hours of nap for those who are jet-lagged. If you have read enough of my posts, you know how we give importance to simple things like going out for a night walk. We will also be seeing Saviour on Spilled Blood from outside. Post which we will also go out to see one of these bridges open up for incoming ships. It's an event worthwhile watching, 1000s of locals come see this every night and clap when it's all done. It's a 2 a.m. thing, so if you can't stay up until then, you will miss it.

Day 6

πŸ–ΌοΈ WALKING TOUR & HERMITAGE MUSEUM

🚢 11 a.m. Walking TourπŸ–ΌοΈ Hermitage🎨 Palace Square
β–Ύ
Hermitage Museum St Petersburg Palace Square Hermitage

We will take a walking tour of the town by 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. After lunch, let's head to the world's second-largest museum: home to over 3 million art pieces, which means you will stay there for nearly six years if you spend 1 minute by each piece of artwork, not to mention that you'd cover the distance of about 24 km (15 mi) walking from one exhibit to the other. Moreover, there are 117 staircases in the Hermitage & more than 18,800 doors. Yes, you will get lost, multiple times. But you will know where to find me πŸ™‚ Since it is a long day, we will relax sometime, watching a street performance as we wait for others to join us at the Palace Square. Find the orange jacket folks. Today we will do a cookout session with others if you are game.

Day 7

βš“ C-189 SUBMARINE & ST. ISAAC'S COLONNADE

βš“ C-189 Subβ›ͺ St. Isaac'sπŸŒ‡ 300-step Sunset
β–Ύ
C-189 Soviet submarine St Petersburg C-189 submarine interior St Isaac St Petersburg from the colonnade

Here is a place to learn how a Soviet submarine actually worked. You will see torpedoes, old communication instruments and even the living quarters of the submarine staff. Built at St. Petersburg's Baltic Factory and launched in 1954, the C-189 is a 613-class diesel-electric submarine that saw 35 years of service in the Soviet fleet. The guide will be one of the people who actually worked in one of these submarines. After lunch, we will head to the St. Isaac's Cathedral Colonnade. The colonnade of St. Isaac's Cathedral in St. Petersburg offers a spectacular panoramic view for watching the sunset, providing an aerial perspective of the city as the light changes. Visitors can climb the approximately 300 steps to the colonnade to see the city from above and experience stunning views, especially during twilight.

Day 8

πŸš‚ MORNING TRAIN TO MOSCOW Β· NUCLEAR BUNKER

πŸš‚ LED β†’ MOW☒️ 80m BunkerπŸŒƒ Red Square Lit
β–Ύ
Train to Moscow Russia Moscow Red Square evening Bunker-42 Moscow nuclear bunker

By evening we will head out to a nuclear bunker, 80 metres under the earth. It is so well hidden that even when you are standing in front of it, you won't realise the grand scale of it. We will reach back to Red Square at night, for it's a place to be as they light up the whole area.

Day 9

🏘️ EXPLORE VLADIMIR · OVERNIGHT IN SUZDAL

🚌 Public Transportβ›ͺ Wooden ChurchesπŸ›οΈ Suzdal Overnight
β–Ύ
Vladimir town Russia Suzdal church Russia Suzdal wooden house Suzdal cathedral spires Suzdal old town Suzdal Soviet preserved town

We will head out from Moscow. Only carry a couple of pairs of clothes as we will only spend a night in Suzdal. We will be commuting by public transport to Suzdal from Vladimir, and back. Out of the entire Russia trip, you will remember Suzdal the most. Suzdal is so perfect, in fact, that I sensed a touch of design behind it, Soviet design, to be specific. It turns out that the Soviet Union decided to avoid building any modern buildings in Suzdal in order to preserve its tourist appeal, banning buildings over two stories high, except for cathedrals, of course. So today Suzdal has none of the tall apartment blocks that characterize other former Soviet towns and cities, but is instead filled with beautiful churches and wooden houses.

Day 10

πŸ™οΈ RETURN TO MOSCOW & FREE EVENING

🚌 Suzdal β†’ MoscowπŸͺ΅ Optional Banya😴 Free Evening
β–Ύ
Moscow city evening Moscow free evening

We will be back to the city by evening. Let's do a crazy banya bath: a banya typically includes a steam room with wooden benches, leafy branches that are used for massages, and buckets or pools of cold water. We will either do this today or post New Year's heavy drinking and techno party. We will take a call according to the group.

Day 11

"I have done 3 trips with OJ and each one has been incredible. Vyshakh has a way of finding the most authentic experiences in every destination, it never feels like a tourist package. The group he puts together is always the right mix of people. I've made friends on these trips that I still keep in touch with years later."

"As an adventure guide from Cape Town I was skeptical, but OJ delivered on every promise. The Meghalaya trip was one of the best I've done anywhere in the world, and I've done a lot. The attention to detail, the safety protocols, the way the group bonded. Vyshakh runs a seriously professional operation with a deeply personal touch."

"New Zealand with OJ was genuinely life-changing. The skydiving, the group bonding, the way Vyshakh manages to make every person feel included, it's special. I came as a solo traveller and left with a group of friends I'll have forever. If you're on the fence about booking an international trip with OJ, just do it."

Do you have a cancellation policy?

+

If Plans Change, We've Got You We totally get it, life happens, and sometimes your plans have to take a rain check. That's why we've kept our cancellation policy simple, transparent, and as kind as possible.

β€’ 45+ days before the trip: 10% cancellation charge

To keep your spot confirmed, please clear the remaining balance by the due date, it helps us lock in stays, permits, and experiences for the group. If payments are delayed beyond that, we'll have to treat it as a cancellation (same policy applies).

What should you bring?

+
πŸ₯Ά Arctic-grade winter kit December–January in Murmansk routinely sits at –15Β°C to –25Β°C with wind chill at Teriberka feeling closer to –35Β°C. Pack: a –30Β°C-rated insulated parka, thermal base layers (top + bottom), a fleece mid-layer, waterproof snow pants, insulated waterproof boots (size up for thick socks), wool socks, balaclava, beanie, neck gaiter, and proper insulated mittens (gloves alone won't cut it). For St. Petersburg + Moscow it's milder (–5Β°C to –15Β°C) but still bring everything. Hand warmers and a power bank that survives cold (lithium dies fast at –20Β°C). Indoor: smart-casual one set for the techno club; everywhere else is jeans + sweater.

I'm coming solo. Is that a problem?

+
  • Most people come alone for my trips
  • About 25% of the people bring a friend or partner
  • Honestly it really doesn't matter
  • I have seen on all the batches I have led, most people really gel with everyone, even the ones who thought they wouldn't gel up surprise themselves always with the way they got comfortable with everyone

What are trips like with OJ?

+
Usually most batch sizes are between 12–14 people aged between 18–38. Most people come alone or with a friend. The trip would feel like you are travelling more with college friends than strangers. We tend to do more outdoorsy, experiential things than regular tours. If we find a beautiful sunset or a hidden spot, we stop the vehicle right away. We usually sleep very late because people play group games and feel they'll miss precious time with the group.

Do I need a Russian tourist visa? Is it included?

+
Yes, Indian passport holders need a Russian tourist visa to enter, and yes, it is included in this trip. OJ handles the paperwork: we send you the documentation checklist after slot block (passport scan, photos, employment letter, ITR, hotel confirmation, invitation letter), submit on your behalf via the Russian Visa Application Centre, and ship the stamped passport back to you. Apply at least 30–45 days before departure. The visa fee is part of the trip cost, you do not pay separately.

Is the New Year techno party included?

+
Yes, entry to the 1991 techno club on the night of Dec 31 β†’ Jan 1 is part of the itinerary. Drinks at the bar are on you. The vibe of Red Square for New Year is something else: the fireworks are vibrant and you'll see thousands of joyful folks counting down. After the countdown, we head straight to the techno club. This night will remain one of the most memorable New Year nights you will ever have.

Will we definitely see the Northern Lights?

+
Honest answer: aurora is a matter of luck and timing, the lights depend on weather conditions and aren't guaranteed. That's exactly why we keep 4 nights inside the Arctic Circle and a buffer Day 4 so the local guides can pick the clearest night. Aurora prediction itself is based on detecting solar Coronal Mass Ejections (CME) a day or two in advance. Murmansk is one of the highest-probability spots on Earth for viewing in December, but no operator can promise you a sighting. We promise 4 hunts; the aurora handles the rest.

Flight & Visa Considerations

✈️
Flight & Visa Guide (Notion)
Fly into Murmansk (MMK) on Day 1; fly out from Moscow (SVO/DME) after noon on Day 13. Most India routings go via Doha, Dubai, or Istanbul to Moscow, then a domestic Aeroflot leg up to Murmansk. Russian tourist visa is included- OJ handles the application; you'll only need to submit documents and biometrics. The Notion guide below has the recommended flight stacks, document checklist, embassy timelines, and what to pack.
