Safety · Solo Female Travel
Egypt and Jordan together as a solo female destination from India scores well below European safety levels but well above what the reputation suggests. Jordan is genuinely safe: top 10 in Middle East for solo female travel. Egypt is more complex: the daily harassment risk in Cairo is real, though violent crime against tourists is rare. A group trip with an operator mitigates 80 percent of the harassment risk. This is THE destination where the OJ group structure changes the trip from stressful to genuinely enjoyable.
OJ groups walk Cairo in tight formations with a local woman guide. No solo movements in central Cairo at any time. The bazaar visit is structured: group enters together, group exits together, no scattering. Harassment incidents during OJ Egypt trips since 2022 are essentially zero. The structure works.
OJ uses certified Egyptologist guides at every site. Group members never deal with vendor touts directly. Pre-trip briefing on the camel-ride scam, the unwanted-souvenir scam, and the photo-then-demand-money scam. Guides handle all transactional interactions.
OJ uses internal flights (Cairo to Amman) not the overland border crossing. Borders to Israel-adjacent zones are avoided entirely. The Wadi Rum desert is approached via Aqaba airport for shorter ground transit.
Only OJ-vetted Bedouin camps (Captain Mohammed's Sun City Camp or similar) are used. These have 4-star hospitality standards, female staff, lockable tents, and 24/7 camp manager presence. No isolated overnight stays in unvetted desert camps.
Pre-trip wardrobe briefing for Egypt portion (covered shoulders, knee-length bottoms, loose-fitting). Beachwear is fine at the Dead Sea and resort areas, not in Cairo. The OJ briefing covers exactly which sites require headscarf (none of the standard tourist sites, but a few mosques). Members feel prepared, not surprised.

I had two friends warn me off Egypt as a solo woman. I almost did not book. The OJ group structure made it completely different. Within 24 hours of landing I felt held by the group. The Cairo woman guide was the difference; she navigated every interaction so I never had to. Pyramids on day 2 will stay with me forever.

Jordan was the surprise. Petra is more magical than the photos suggest. The Wadi Rum Bedouin camp on New Year Eve, with fire and stars and the OJ group, was the most surreal night of my life. Zero safety concerns the entire 5 days in Jordan.

I am 38 and have done 25 plus international trips. Egypt plus Jordan with OJ was the trip I would not have done solo. The harassment risk in Cairo is real if you are unprepared. With OJ I was prepared. The group dinners every evening were the heart of the trip. Made friends I am still in touch with.

Egypt scores 6 out of 10 standalone, 8 out of 10 with a group operator like OJ. The daily harassment risk in Cairo is real for solo women. Violent crime against tourists is rare. The structure of an organized group with women guides, vetted hotels, and zero unstructured solo time in Cairo changes the experience from stressful to enjoyable. This is the destination where the operator matters most.
Yes, very safe. Jordan ranks consistently top 10 in the Middle East for solo female travel. Petra is heavily touristed and well-policed. Wadi Rum Bedouin camps are family-run and welcoming. Amman is a normal cosmopolitan city. Most solo Indian women who do Jordan report it as their best Middle East experience.
Egypt: covered shoulders, knee-covering bottoms, loose-fitting. No tank tops, no shorts. Beachwear is fine at Sharm El Sheikh resorts only. Jordan: same dress code at religious sites, more flexible at Petra and Wadi Rum. The Dead Sea has resort dress code (swimwear fine). OJ pre-trip briefing covers exact site-specific requirements.
Jordan-only trips are doable from India but the flight cost economics work against you. From India to Amman is similar to flying to Cairo (8 to 11 hours). The OJ trip combines both for flight efficiency. If Jordan-only is your goal, look at it as Petra plus Wadi Rum plus Dead Sea, 5 to 6 days minimum, around INR 1.4L solo without group structure.
Pre-trip safety briefing video call covering Cairo specifically, women-only WhatsApp group with the trip leader, twin sharing room policy (mandatory in Cairo), local woman guide for Cairo days, private vehicle for all inter-city transit, vetted Bedouin camps with female staff, OJ local fixers in Cairo and Amman, 24/7 on-call coordinator, and post-trip check-in. Trip cost is around INR 1.95L per person, 10 days including flights from Bangalore.
