Best Time to Visit
China is a country of regional climates: Beijing winter is brutal, Shanghai summer is humid hell, Yunnan is pleasant year-round. For most Indian travellers doing the Beijing plus Shanghai plus Xian classic circuit, the only sensible windows are April to May and September to October. Avoid Chinese New Year (late January or February) when domestic travel makes everything impossible.

Direct flights from BLR, BOM, DEL to Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou on Air India, IndiGo, China Eastern. Flight time 6 to 9 hours. Average fare INR 35K to 70K return. Visa-on-arrival for Indians (15 days) is the new 2024 to 2026 policy and has dramatically lowered the friction. Apply through any port of entry. Most Indians spend INR 1.8L to 2.8L for an 8-day China trip. The OJ China trip runs in October specifically when the autumn light hits the Forbidden City and the Great Wall hike weather is ideal.

Not visa-free, but visa-on-arrival. Since 2024 to 2026 China has allowed visa-on-arrival for Indian passport holders for stays up to 15 days. Apply at any port of entry. Fee around USD 30. Approval is generally smooth with confirmed return tickets and hotel bookings. The friction is much lower than the previous embassy-visa process.
October. The autumn light hits Beijing perfectly, the Great Wall is at ideal hiking temperature, Shanghai is comfortable, and most domestic Chinese travel happens around Golden Week (October 1 to 7) which clears up afterwards. May is a close second but watch out for the May Day Golden Week.
Yes for tourism. Chinese New Year (late January or February) is when 1.5 billion people travel domestically to family. Trains are impossible to book, flights are 3x price, many tourist sites close, restaurants close, and the cities empty out. It is a fascinating cultural phenomenon to witness but a logistical disaster for a tourist.
Both. The OJ classic circuit is Beijing (3 days: Forbidden City, Great Wall, Temple of Heaven) plus Shanghai (2 days: Bund, French Concession, Yu Garden) plus Xian (2 days: Terracotta Warriors) plus 1 day buffer. Beijing alone misses the modern China. Shanghai alone misses the imperial history. Both together is 8 to 10 days well spent.
The OJ China trip runs in October. 10 days covering Beijing (Forbidden City, Great Wall hike at Mutianyu, Temple of Heaven), Xian (Terracotta Warriors), Shanghai (Bund, French Concession), and a Yangtze cruise option. Trip cost is around INR 2.2L per person including flights and the visa-on-arrival paperwork support.
