Safety · Solo Female Travel
China is one of the safest large countries for solo female travellers, full stop. Violent crime against tourists is essentially zero. Government surveillance is extensive enough that public-space crime is rare. The actual risks are practical: language barrier (English coverage is genuinely poor outside top hotels), payment app dependency (Alipay or WeChat Pay is needed for everything), and the digital firewall blocking Google Maps and WhatsApp.
OJ provides Mandarin-speaking local guides in Beijing and Xian. Pre-loaded Mandarin translation apps on group phones (Pleco, Microsoft Translator). 4-star international hotels with English-speaking front desk. Group members are never sent alone to navigate Chinese-only menus or train stations.
OJ helps each member set up Alipay Tour Pass before the trip (linked to Indian credit card, valid in China for 90 days). Cash backup of CNY 2000 provided. Group dinners and major activities are pre-paid through OJ so individual payment is not needed.
OJ provides a vetted VPN setup before the trip (ExpressVPN or similar that works in China). WhatsApp Whatsapp via VPN. Group WeChat backup channel for in-China communication. Pre-trip briefing on how to use Baidu Maps as Google Maps alternative.
OJ uses the high-speed rail (CRH) with reserved business-class seats. Group arrives at stations 90 minutes early. The trip coordinator handles all ticket logistics. Group stays together through security and boarding. We do not use overnight sleeper trains.
Pre-trip wardrobe briefing. Modest dress in Beijing and Xian (covered shoulders, knee-length bottoms recommended at temples and government buildings). Shanghai is significantly more liberal, beachwear flexibility. The OJ briefing covers exactly what to expect at each site.

China was the destination I had postponed for 5 years because of the language barrier. The OJ Mandarin guide changed everything. Within 2 days I was navigating Beijing alleys on my own with confidence. The Great Wall hike at Mutianyu in autumn light was unreal.

The Alipay Tour Pass setup that OJ did before the trip saved me real stress. Every meal, every taxi, every souvenir is digital payment in China. Without it I would have spent half my trip at currency exchanges. With it, frictionless.

I am 31 and have done a lot of Asia travel. China with OJ was the safest-feeling Asian country I have visited. Public spaces are well-policed, harassment is essentially zero, and the local guides knew the cultural context for everything. The Xian Terracotta Warriors day was the highlight of my year.

Yes, one of the safest large countries globally. Violent crime against tourists is essentially zero. Public spaces are extensively surveilled, which has the effect of making harassment and street crime rare. The actual risks are practical (language, payment apps, digital firewall) not personal-safety. A group trip handles all the practical risks.
Anti-Indian sentiment as a daily traveller experience is essentially zero. The bilateral political tensions exist at the diplomatic level but do not translate to street-level treatment. Indian travellers consistently report neutral-to-warm hospitality across Beijing, Shanghai, and Xian. The OJ trip has run for 3 years without a single anti-Indian incident.
Not directly. WhatsApp, Instagram, Google Maps, Gmail, YouTube are all blocked behind the Great Firewall. Workarounds: install a vetted VPN (ExpressVPN works reliably) before arrival. Use WeChat for in-country messaging (mandatory). Use Baidu Maps as Google Maps alternative. OJ pre-trip setup covers all of this so you do not arrive unprepared.
Less than other Asian countries but more than reputation suggests. Beijing has excellent vegetarian Buddhist restaurants (Lotus Vegetarian, Pure Lotus). Shanghai has international vegetarian-friendly cuisine. Xian is the toughest (lots of lamb), but vegetarian noodles are widely available. OJ pre-vets restaurants for vegetarian options at every meal.
Pre-trip safety briefing video call, Alipay Tour Pass setup, VPN setup, women-only WhatsApp group with the trip leader (via VPN), twin sharing room policy, Mandarin-speaking guides in Beijing and Xian, 4-star international brand hotels, high-speed rail business class booking, OJ local fixer in Beijing, 24/7 on-call coordinator, and post-trip check-in. Trip cost is around INR 2.2L per person, 10 days including flights from Bangalore.
