Best Time to Visit
The Kashmir Great Lakes Trek has a window of exactly 2 months: July and August. Outside this window the lakes are snow-covered, the passes are dangerous or impassable, and the alpine meadows have not melted out. Inside this window you get one of the most spectacular high-altitude treks in the Himalayas: 7 alpine lakes, 4 high passes, 75 kilometres over 7 days, all above 3,000 metres.

This is a TREK, not a regular Kashmir trip. Direct flights from BLR, BOM, DEL to Srinagar on IndiGo, SpiceJet, Air India. Flight time 2 to 3 hours, fares INR 6K to 18K. No visa needed. Most Indians spend INR 35K to 50K for the 7-day trek including flights and gear rental. The OJ Kashmir Great Lakes trek is rated moderate-to-difficult: requires good cardio fitness, prior trek experience helpful, ability to walk 12 to 15 km per day at altitude. This is not a tourist trip, it is a serious Himalayan trek.

No, not as a first trek. The Great Lakes trek is rated moderate-to-difficult. It demands 6 to 7 consecutive days of 12 to 15 kilometre walks at altitudes between 2,500 and 4,200 metres. Four high passes (Nichnai, Gadsar, Zaj Pass, Margan) involve sustained ascents. Recommended prior treks: at minimum one moderate Himalayan trek like Hampta Pass or Sandakphu. Do not pick Great Lakes as your first Himalayan experience.
Cardio fitness is the requirement. You should be able to run 5 kilometres in under 35 minutes, or walk briskly for 90 minutes without stopping. Strength fitness (climbing stairs with 10 kg backpack) helps. Three months of pre-trek prep is the minimum for someone starting from sedentary. OJ provides a structured pre-trek prep plan.
Real risk. Max altitude is around 4,200 metres at the high passes. Most trekkers feel mild altitude effects (headache, mild nausea) above 3,500 metres. OJ trip includes acclimatization buffer days at Srinagar plus base camp. The trip coordinator carries pulse oximeter and Diamox. Severe altitude sickness requires descent. We have evacuated 2 members in 5 years of running the trek.
Yes. The trek route (Sonmarg, Nichnai, Krishansar, Gadsar, Satsar) is in remote high-altitude meadows far from any politically sensitive area. The Indian Army has a presence along the trek route which actually adds to traveller safety. OJ has run the trek for 5 years through multiple political cycles without disruption.
