Best Time to Visit
Ladakh has a hard tourist window: June to September. The Manali to Leh and Srinagar to Leh roads close from October to May, leaving Leh accessible only by air (and even that is weather-dependent). Inside the June to September window, Ladakh is one of the most cinematically dramatic landscapes in India: high-altitude desert plateau, Buddhist monasteries, Pangong Lake, Nubra Valley, and bike-trip culture that has its own social ecosystem.

Direct flights from BLR, BOM, DEL, CCU to Leh on IndiGo, SpiceJet, Air India. Flight time 2 to 4 hours, fares INR 8K to 25K return. No visa needed. Inner Line Permit required for some areas (Pangong, Nubra, Tso Moriri) and is automatic at airport for Indians. Most Indians spend INR 35K to 80K for a 7 to 10 day Ladakh trip. OJ does not currently run a Ladakh trip; this is a high-search destination where multiple operators compete. Famous bike-trip operators include Adventures Overland, Eternal Mewar; standard tour operators include MakeMyTrip, Yatra.

July or August. Both have peak summer warmth (10 to 28C daytime), all roads open including Khardung La and Chang La passes, Pangong and Nubra accessible, and the famous bike trip culture is in full swing. June is also excellent but Khardung La may have lingering snow until mid-June. September is the smart shoulder month with autumn colours and fewer crowds; nights get cold.
Depends on your priorities. Flying to Leh: faster, no altitude shock (gradual acclimatization needed), suitable for 5 to 7 day trips. Road trip from Manali: dramatic Rohtang and Baralacha passes, harder on the body, 14 plus day commitment, the iconic bike-trip experience. Road trip from Srinagar: scenic Kashmir to Ladakh transition, less crowded than Manali route, 10 plus day trip. Each is a different Ladakh experience.
Real and significant. Leh sits at 3,500m. Khardung La crosses 5,360m. Pangong is at 4,350m. Mandatory rest day at Leh on arrival (no exploring on day 1). Most travellers feel mild altitude effects for 24 to 48 hours. Diamox helps. Hydration is critical. Severe altitude sickness requires descent to Manali or evacuation. Travel insurance with high-altitude coverage is essential.
Demanding but doable. The Manali to Leh highway crosses 5 high passes and includes long unpaved stretches. The risks are real: vehicle breakdown, altitude sickness, weather, accidents. Safety requirements: prior motorbike riding experience, full safety gear, mandatory backup vehicle support, satellite communicator. Most first-time bike trippers join a group tour; experienced riders go in self-organized groups.
Not currently. Ladakh is on the OJ 2027 roadmap. For Ladakh in 2026, options: book with established Ladakh operators (Adventures Overland for bike trips, Eternal Mewar for cultural tours), or self-organize. Ladakh is one of the most operator-served Indian destinations; many reliable options exist.
