Destination Comparison
Kashmir wins on lush green landscapes, gentler altitude, cultural depth (Mughal gardens, houseboat culture), and broader season window. Ladakh wins on dramatic landscape uniqueness, monastery culture, and adventure intensity. For first-time Himalayan India, Kashmir as soft landing. For adventure travellers, Ladakh.

Kashmir. The gentler altitude (Srinagar at 1,500m vs Leh at 3,500m) makes Kashmir the safer first Himalayan experience. The broader season window (April to October vs Ladakh's June to September) and lush green landscape make it less demanding. Ladakh is the natural second Himalayan trip.
Both are very safe with operator structure. Kashmir is in a more political context (do read the political-situation FAQ) but the actual on-ground safety profile for women travellers is high. Ladakh is in a more remote context with Buddhist cultural emphasis on hospitality.
Yes via the Srinagar to Leh highway (June to October only). The combined trip is 10 to 14 days and INR 80K to 1.2L. The Srinagar to Leh drive is one of the most dramatic mountain road trips in India. OJ does not currently run this combo as one trip; book Kashmir and Ladakh separately or with an operator like Adventures Overland.
Real. Leh sits at 3,500 metres. Most travellers feel mild altitude effects (headache, mild breathlessness, sleep disturbance) for 24 to 48 hours on arrival. Mandatory rest day on day 1. Carry Diamox after consulting doctor. Kashmir has effectively no altitude challenge at standard tourist sites.
OJ Kashmir runs (Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam, houseboat experience). OJ does not currently run a Ladakh trip; Ladakh is on the 2027 roadmap. For Ladakh in 2026, recommended operators include Adventures Overland, Eternal Mewar, and Royal Enfield for bike trips.
