What to expect on the ground

The Maldives is hot and tropical. You will live in swimwear and beach clothes, so pack minimally, plus strong sun and reef protection.

Documents plus money

Carry digital copies on your phone plus a printed backup in your checked bag.

• Passport with at least 6 months validity beyond your return date
• Visa or e-visa confirmation (printed plus digital)
• Travel insurance card plus emergency contact numbers
• Forex card plus one backup credit or debit card
• Some cash in the local currency in small denominations

Clothing for a hot, humid climate

Light, breathable, loose cotton or linen. You will sweat, so pack a few changes and use hotel laundry.

• 2 to 3 pairs of light trousers, shorts, or skirts
• Swimwear plus a quick-dry towel
• A sun hat, sunglasses, and strong sunscreen
• Comfortable sandals plus one pair of closed walking shoes

• Reef-safe sunscreen, a rash guard, and snorkel gear if you have your own
• A light cover-up for sun and for moving around the resort

Toiletries plus health

Pack travel-size containers, and carry any prescription medicines in their original packaging with a doctor's note.
