Itinerary · 6 days
Six days is the smart Bhutan rhythm for Indians. The arc: 1 day Paro arrival, 2 days Thimphu plus Punakha, 1 day Punakha valley, 2 days back to Paro plus Tiger's Nest hike. Anything shorter cuts Punakha; anything longer adds significant SDF cost without proportional experience increase.
Arrive Paro Airport (one of world's most dramatic landings). Transfer to Paro hotel.
Light walk through Paro town plus Paro Dzong visit.
Traditional Bhutanese dinner at Sonam Trophel restaurant.
Drive to Thimphu (1 hour). National Memorial Chorten plus Buddha Dordenma giant statue.
Drive to Punakha via Dochula Pass (3 hours). 108 chortens views.
Check in to Punakha hotel plus dinner.
Punakha Dzong (most beautiful dzong in Bhutan) plus suspension bridge walk.
Chimi Lhakhang fertility temple plus rice paddy walk.
Dinner at Punakha hotel.
Drive back to Thimphu plus quick visits: Folk Heritage Museum, traditional medicine.
Continue to Paro plus check in.
Traditional hot stone bath at Paro hotel plus dinner.
Hike to Tiger's Nest Monastery (Paro Taktsang). 4 to 6 hours round trip. Start 7am.
Rest at hotel plus optional Rinpung Dzong visit.
Final Bhutanese dinner plus traditional dance performance.
Final breakfast plus souvenir shopping in Paro.
Transfer to airport plus departure.
Return to India.
Mid-range solo traveller estimate. Couples sharing rooms save around 25% per person. Luxury upgrades add 50% to 100%.

The SDF (Sustainable Development Fee) is the main cost. Indians pay USD 100 per day (reduced from USD 200 international rate). A 5-day Bhutan trip adds INR 42,000 in SDF alone. The SDF funds Bhutanese conservation, education, and healthcare. This is intentional: Bhutan limits tourism volume by pricing.
Possible but you must cut something. 4 days: Paro plus Thimphu only, no Punakha. 5 days adds Punakha but rushed. 6 days is the standard. Below 4 days the SDF makes the trip economically inefficient.
The breakdown above totals around INR 1,20,000 for a solo traveller (SDF is half the cost). As a couple, the per-person cost drops marginally (SDF is per person, but hotels split). Luxury upgrades (Aman, Six Senses, Bhutan Spirit Sanctuary) push it to INR 3,00,000 plus.
Yes by SDF efficiency. Group trips with OJ pre-book the SDF, vetted hotels, mandatory guide plus vehicle as a package. Solo Bhutan travel is doable but requires significantly more paperwork and pre-booking. Most Indians book Bhutan through an operator.
Moderate fitness sufficient. The hike is 4 to 6 hours round trip with steady ascent (gaining 800m vertical). Most people can complete it with rest stops. Pony rides available to the halfway point. Skipping Tiger's Nest is not recommended; it is the iconic Bhutan experience.
