Meghalaya is the trip we recommend most often to people doing their first group trip. It is strange enough to feel like a proper adventure, close enough that nobody needs a visa, and physically demanding in a way that bonds a group without breaking anyone. The living root bridges are grown rather than built, over decades, by training fig roots across rivers.
Who runs group trips to Meghalaya from India
Crowded field. Meghalaya has become one of the most sold domestic destinations in India and nearly every operator runs it, from budget backpacking outfits upward.
One in the Orange Jacket runs a 9-day Meghalaya trip, graded Moderate, in groups of 12 to 20.
Because the field is crowded, compare on group size and on itinerary depth. A lot of Meghalaya trips are five or six days and cover the same three photo stops. The longer itineraries reach the parts most people miss, including Mawryngkhang and the sacred forests.
Independent travel is straightforward if you can drive or hire a car. The roads are good and the distances are short.
What the trip actually involves
Nine days, based around Shillong, Cherrapunji and the Dawki area. The double-decker living root bridge at Nongriat is the trip's signature, and the honest detail is the descent: roughly 3,000 steps down and the same back up, which is harder on the way out than anyone expects.
Nohkalikai is the tallest plunge waterfall in India. River canyoning is the wet, loud, best-fun day. Dawki has water clear enough that boats look suspended, and camping by it is the calm night of the trip.
The Mawryngkhang trek crosses bamboo walkways bolted to a cliff face, which is not technically difficult and is meaningfully unnerving if you dislike heights.
The sacred forests are groves protected by Khasi custom for centuries, where nothing may be removed. They are quiet in an unusual way.

How the days actually run
Guwahati in Assam is the entry, then roughly three hours up to Shillong, which sits at around 1,500 metres and is cool year round. Shillong is a proper hill town with a strong music scene, which surprises first-timers.
Cherrapunji and Mawsynram are the wettest inhabited places on earth, and the landscape shows it. Nohkalikai drops around 340 metres in a single fall. The limestone caves in this area, Mawsmai and Arwah, are walkable and genuinely large.
The root bridge day is the hard one. Down to Nongriat, roughly 3,000 steps, over the double-decker bridge grown from living fig roots across decades, then back up. The climb out is where people find out what kind of shape they are in. Staying overnight at Nongriat rather than doing it as a day trip is the better version if the itinerary allows it.
Dawki and Shnongpdeng on the Umngot river are the calm end. The water is clear enough that boats appear suspended, and camping by the river is the quiet night. Mawlynnong nearby is marketed as Asia's cleanest village, which is a strange claim and a pleasant stop.
Visas, permits and getting there
No visa or permit required for Indian nationals in Meghalaya. Fly into Guwahati in Assam, which is the main gateway, then drive up to Shillong in around three hours.
Foreign nationals have different requirements for parts of the North East, but Meghalaya itself is straightforward.
When to go
September to May. October to April is the reliable window with clear conditions and manageable walking.
Meghalaya includes some of the wettest places on earth, and the monsoon between June and August is spectacular and impractical. Waterfalls are at their most dramatic and the root bridge trek becomes genuinely slippery.
Meghalaya or Kerala?
Both are green, both are monsoon country, both get sold as the lush option. Kerala is backwaters, beaches, ayurveda and a well-developed tourism industry. Meghalaya is caves, waterfalls, root bridges and homestays, with far less infrastructure and far fewer people. Kerala is more comfortable and more polished. Meghalaya is stranger and more physical, and you will have more of it to yourself.

Anyone who cannot manage 3,000 steps down and back. That is the honest fitness bar for the double-decker bridge, and skipping it removes the main reason to come.
Anyone wanting luxury accommodation. Homestays and simple guesthouses are the norm, and that is part of the appeal.
