Itinerary · 7 days
Seven days is the smart Sri Lanka rhythm for Indians: 1 day Colombo plus orientation, 1 day Sigiriya (cultural triangle), 2 days Kandy plus train to hill country, 1 day Ella plus tea plantations, 2 days Mirissa beach. The famous Kandy to Ella train ride is the cinematic centerpiece. Anything shorter and you cut the train ride or the beach; anything longer slips into beach lethargy.
Arrive Bandaranaike Airport plus drive to Colombo hotel (90 min). Quick orientation.
Galle Face Green walk plus Gangaramaya Temple plus Pettah market quick visit.
Dinner at Ministry of Crab or Nuga Gama plus early sleep.
Drive to Sigiriya (4 hours). Check in at Sigiriya hotel.
Climb Sigiriya Rock Fortress (2 hours, 1200 steps). Sunset view from top.
Cultural dinner at Sigiriya lodge plus traditional dance performance.
Drive to Kandy via Dambulla Cave Temple (2 hours).
Temple of the Tooth Relic plus Kandy Lake walk plus Royal Botanical Gardens.
Traditional Kandyan dance performance plus dinner.

Final hill country dinner plus prep for departure.

Mirissa beach arrival plus afternoon swim plus rest.

Final beach time plus whale watching boat (if December to April).
Drive back to Colombo airport (3 hours).
Departure.
Mid-range solo traveller estimate. Couples sharing rooms save around 25% per person. Luxury upgrades add 50% to 100%.

Possible but you must cut something. 5 days: Colombo plus Kandy only, no train, no beach. 6 days: Colombo plus Kandy plus Sigiriya plus Mirissa, no Ella. 7 days is the minimum for the iconic train ride plus hill country plus beach. The Kandy to Ella train is non-negotiable for Sri Lanka first-timers.
Add half-day Yala on the Ella to Mirissa drive (between days 5 and 6). Full-day Yala requires 8 plus days. Yala has elephants, leopards, and excellent birdlife; a half-day morning safari is sufficient for first visitors.
The breakdown above totals around INR 95,000 for a solo traveller mid-range (one of the most affordable international trips from India). As a couple sharing rooms, per-person cost drops to about INR 80,000. Luxury upgrades (5-star Kandy and Mirissa hotels) push it to INR 1,50,000 plus.
Yes for first-time visitors. The Kandy to Ella train booking culture (and the reserved seat coordination), the Sigiriya plus Dambulla routing, the Mirissa beach hotel vetting are all friction the operator handles. Solo travel to Sri Lanka is also doable; many Indians do both.
February. Best window for south and west coast (dry, calm seas, optimal whale watching). The trip-source bundle exists at trip-sources/sri-lanka/.
